Nintendo had a surprising new Fire Emblem title to announce today, and it’s coming rather soon on 3DS. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is due on 19th May in both North America and Europe; it draws inspiration from Fire Emblem Gaiden, a Famicom title that originally only saw release in Japan.

The core plot revolves around Alm and Celica, two warriors on opposing sides of a battle between North and South kingdoms on the continent of Valentia. The key hook that the game is taking from Gaiden is the sense of free-roaming, flexible character progression and the presence of dungeons. A reimagining, it should provide a fairly distinct experience from the formula seen in Fire Emblem: Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates.
