Video game analyst and Nintendo fans’ arch-nemesis, Michael Pacther, shares his opinion on the Nintendo Switch console.
His take on the console are pretty much what a lot of people in the industry feel like, including Nintendo fans: that the launch lineup is underwhelming, and that at $300, it’s going to be tough to compete with PS4 and Xbox One.
In a letter to investors, Pachter wrote:
“Priced at $300, Switch is not a more affordable alternative to the PS4 and Xbox One. Initial pricing is likely to be problematic given an underwhelming slate at launch and the fact that the PS4 and Xbox One are consistently discounted at retail below their starting prices of $300 with a free software pack-in,”
He also said that while Nintendo’s first party lineup for the Switch is solid, the console might have a hard time attracting third party developers. He concludes that if the Switch launches slowly, third-party support might “begin to wane” like it did with the Wii U.
A great launch is important to any consumer electronics product, especially video games. The Switch launches with just one must-have game: Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Will that be enough to sell the 2 million consoles Nintendo will have ready during the first month?
