Harry Potter: Wizards Unite brings Rowling’s Potter universe to the real-world.
Pokémon Go creator Niantic is working on a new Harry Potter-themed game known as Harry Potter: Wizards Unite.
As initially reported by TechCrunch, Niantic is working with Warner Bros. new Harry Potter-themed game development studio Portkey Games. It’s unclear what form Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will take, but going by the success of Pokémon Go and Niantic’s history of developing only augmented reality games, it’s likely we’ll see the same sort of gameplay form with this Harry Potter spin-off.
A couple of ideas that float out from the top of my head has people teaming up with different Hogwarts houses instead of Pokémon Gym teams. It’s possible we’ll see Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Slytherin members facing off against each other as they capture fantastic beasts that roam the streets of towns and cities around the world.
With a name like Harry Potter: Wizards Unite it sounds as if Niantic will be focusing on community events a lot more with this entry. It’s possible we could see raid-like events where players have to capture dementors that prowl the streets, using gestures with their phone to perform spells out of a virtual wand.
Obviously, that’s just pure conjecture by me, but elements like that wouldn’t be too surprising – even if it sounds like a reskinning of Pokémon Go.
TechCrunch states that Niantic’s past project Ingress has a “significant influence” upon the design of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. It’s also likely that a brand as big as Harry Potter, along with the fact that four more Fantastic Beasts films are set to come over the next few years, this could be an even bigger success for Niantic than Pokémon Go was.
So, if you’re fed up with people talking about and playing Pokémon Go all the time, you’re soon going to learn to hate Harry Potter too.
