Before the Switch was released, Nintendo commented on how the console might surpass the Wii in terms of sales. Which many found unbelievable, since the Wii has sold over 100 million units.
But it now appears that this might just happen. At least, if the sales current trend continues.
According to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, the Switch is on track to surpass Wii sales after 10 months on the market. Which would be an incredible achievement.
When the Wii was released over 10 years ago, it was the hot new item — everyone was talking about the console and it managed to reach mainstream consumers like no other console before it.
And that’s what Piscatella points out:
“Switch is on pace to exceed Wii by 20%+ over the first 10 months of sales. The thing is though, the Switch, from a demographic and usage basis, is nothing like the Wii. It’s much more a core gamer console than anything Nintendo has done since maybe NGC? …and because it’s a hybrid, multi console ownership per household could be a thing, making upside potential bigger than the Wii.”
The Switch doesn’t have the same hype as the Wii, but the console is selling well nevertheless. And that’s mainly thanks to great games: Zelda, Mario Kart, Mario Odyssey, and Splatoon 2 were all big hits. Even a game like Arms has sold over 1 million units on the Switch.
